Voting papers came in the post - what now
Most years the vote is routine. Some years it decides something that changes what you own. Here is how to tell which, and what your vote does.
The papers call this a "proxy statement"; when two sides send papers, a "proxy contest".
Routine or not?
Every year the fund asks holders to elect directors and approve the auditor - routine, and the meeting passes without most holders noticing. The years to read the papers are the ones that propose closing the fund down, folding it into another fund, turning it into a regular mutual fund, changing who runs it, or seating directors put up by a large investor. The fund's page here says in plain words what the coming vote is about and when the meeting is.
What your vote does
You can vote for, against, or not at all; voting is free. If you do nothing, your shares stay as they are, and the vote passes or fails without you. Some funds need a minimum number of votes to hold the meeting at all and will write again, sometimes twice, if too few holders answer - that is why the same papers can arrive more than once.
When two sides are asking
When a large investor and the people who run the fund both ask for your vote, you receive papers from each, in different colours, and may be telephoned. Each side's papers say what it wants; a proposal that passes can end in a buy-back, new directors, or the fund closing. You can vote one card and ignore the other; the last card you send in is the one that counts.
Dates and ways to vote
The date on the papers is the meeting day. Brokers usually need your instruction a business day or two earlier - ask yours for its own cut-off. Voting by post, by telephone or on the website printed on the papers all count the same.
